Acknowledgments

Financial support for the geotechnical engineering reconnaissance was provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under grant number 0321781.  Appreciation is expressed to Dr. Cliff Astill (NSF) for his interest and support of this work.  Prof. David Frost and Dr. Scott Deaton (Georgia Institute of Technology and Dataforensics , Atlanta, GA) provided the software PQUAKE, which was used to record and organize data during the geotechnical reconnaissance.

The reconnaissance effort was made much simpler thanks to the coordination with the EERI reconnaissance team led by Dr. Richard Klingner.  The EERI reconnaissance team, composed of Richard Klingner, Anna Lang, and Paul Flores, initiated their reconnaissance two days prior to the NSF team reconnaissance team, and their observations served as a guide to the NSF team.  The NSF reconnaissance team also benefited from the collaboration of the Centro Nacional para la Prevencion de Desastres (CENAPRED)/Sociedad Mexicana de Ingeniería Sísmica (SMIS) team. In particular, we would like to acknowledge de help of the team leader, Sergio Alcocer, and team members Leonardo Flores Corona and Carlos Reyes Salinas.

Dr. Tonatiuh Domínguez Reyes, director of the Vulcanological Observatory in the University of Colima, generously provided the help of his staff in the reconnaissance efforts.  In particular, the help of Dr. Domínguez permitted the collaboration of Carlos Navarro Ochoa in the reconnaissance effort.  This report includes many of the observations and insights obtained during meetings with faculty of the Vulcanological Observatory and of the Civil Engineering department at the University of Colima.  We would like to thank all the individuals present at these meetings.  The installations of the Vulcanological Observatory were used for this and other meetings.

Dr. Mario G. Ordaz Schroeder provided useful insights into site response and seismological issues in the Colima Earthquake.

Hugo Saucedo Acosta, president of the Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles de Colima, and Liliana G. Alfaro Santos, director of the Cámara Mexicana de la Industria de la Construcción (CMIC), provided access to a database of residential damage collected after the earthquake.  The help of Roberto C. Cazares Serrano, of CMIC, in obtaining this information is greatly valued.

Salvador L. Díaz del Castillo, an engineer at Suelo-Estructura, S.C., in Guadalajara, Mexico, generously volunteered damage observations and pictures from ground failures caused by the earthquake.

In addition, a number of people in the field volunteered their help and made the reconnaissance work easier. These individuals include Jorge Cardona López, Gabriel Bautista, and Sergio Negrete, who guided us in visits through Villa de Álvarez, and Ing. Fernando Brizuela Gudiño (Coordinador de Proyectos Estratégicos), an engineer with the City of Manzanillo, who guided us in our visit there.

A large number of additional individuals helped us during this reconnaissance.  Some names may be missing due to our mistake alone.  Our gratitude goes to all those that collaborated.
